I am about to enter a a debt management program for one of my credit cards. The say that they can negotiate a settlement. My question is can I do that on my own? Will the credit card company listen to me? or do I need to let the management service handle it?

Yes, you can!! Call them up and offer them 70 cents on the dollar. Make sure you get EVERYTHING in writing, their acceptance and when it is paid in full.

For one credit card you can do it yourself. If you can pay the whole thing off it looks better on your credit report. If it is a large bill you can call and negotiate it down. I had a large bill once and I was able to knock 40% off the balance. Even though it looks best on your credit report to pay the whole thing off you can save a lot of money.
