The only rule to remember is: Use your credit card as if you were spending your cash, then pay off your balance every month. If you do that, you’ll build your credit score, and then you can reap the *rewards* from rewards cards.

The two best college student rewards cards are the Citi mtvU card and the Citi Driver’s Edge for Students card. (However, the best card for *you* will always depend on how much you spend in various categories like gas, restaurants, entertainment, etc. since each card offers different rewards percentages in different categories.)

The things you need to look for in a credit card are ones with no annual fee and a low APR. Since you’re in college, you probably get tons of 0% introductory rate cards in the mail. Any of these are ok, but just be aware of the fine print. To maintain the best credit, purchase one thing (gas, groceries) once a month. When you receive the statement, pay the balance in FULL as soon as possible. Make sure you never miss a payment or spend more than you can afford. Go to for additional information. Low Credit limit. I have one from Capital One. Got it to build credit. I have a $500 limit. Anything over that is scary.
